Economically Sustainable Services for Securing Access to Digital Legacy

20th Nov 2015 : 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Computational nature of digital media requires that we consider both the storage of software and content files and the computational environments in which they can be instantiated. In this webinar we will discuss the economic roots of digital obsolescence and the principles on which we can build sustainable services to access and process legacy digital assets. Such services are important to support preservation activities, including selection, characterization, and dissemination of digital assets. We illustrate the technical feasibility for achieving the economy of scale, e.g., by leveraging cloud services, and discuss business models that could sustain relatively rare but critical use of legacy content and applications.
