The Open Preservation Foundation (OPF) is pleased to welcome Artefactual as a bronze member.
For those unaware, Artefactual is a professional services and commercial open source software company. They design and develop open source software with a focus on digital access and preservation. Artefactual started in British Columbia, Canada but has always had an international perspective and presence. Their software is used by thousands of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums, in a wide range of digital preservation applications. They are best known for Access to Memory (AtoM), an archival description and management system, and Archivematica, a digital preservation system.
Artefactual have always worked alongside a great international network of multidisciplinary practitioners and are great members of the digipres community. A dedicated technical contributor to the OPF since 2015, Artefactual’s contribution to our work was focused on the development, maintenance and public release management of the Format Identification for Digital Objects (FIDO) software tool. FIDO is included in Archivematica, but can also be used as a stand-alone command line tool or incorporated into other digital preservation systems.
We look forward to supporting Artefactual as they continue their work. Their Chief Archivist, Kelly Stewart has said:
“Artefactual Systems first joined the OPF as an affiliate member in 2015. We believe the OPF is a valuable and essential resource for the cultural memory community. As a company, we have always believed in contributing to a global community of practice. We are excited to take the next step and contribute to the OPF in a more substantive way by becoming a bronze member. Through our membership, we hope to share information, resources, and stories (agonies and successes alike), in order to realize a world where cultural memory thrives.”
Julie Allen, Executive Director of the OPF is excited that Artefactual have upgraded to become a bronze member. They said, “Since 2015, Artefactual have been working with the OPF as a Technical Contributor and during that time they have helped us in many different ways. Their work maintaining and developing FIDO, working together with other OPF members on the Preservation Action Registry (PAR) project and presenting at our many events over the years, are just a few of the contributions that they have made. I could go on, but we would be here for a long time! We really appreciate all their efforts in the past 9 years, and we look forward to embarking on this new relationship with them.”
Artefactual Systems joins their fellow OPF members from archives, libraries, research institutions, universities, and service providers collaborating on shared solutions for effective and efficient digital preservation.
