The Open Preservation Foundation is pleased to announce that the Preservation Monitoring Guideline is available for our members to review.
The Preservation Monitoring Guideline is an important step in describing how your organisation should be monitoring its data and applied IT technologies for ingest, preservation and dissemination, and assessing wider preservation risks.
This work is an indirect output of the OPF working group International Comparison of Recommended File Formats (ICRFF), which was established in 2022 to discuss issues related to file formats. Its first deliverable was a document that compares the preferred and accepted file formats used in digital preservation strategies at cultural heritage and research institutions globally.
This Preservation Monitoring Guideline was created by ICRFF members Asbjørn Skødt, former of the Danish National Archives now University of Copenhagen, Sam Alloing of the National Library of the Netherlands, Stefano Allegrezza of the University of Macerata (Italy), and Uta Parmaksiz of ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences (Germany) after questioning how you can help your organisation perform monitoring and risk assessment of its historical data.
With this work, we aim to inspire those battling with setting up Preservation Watch monitoring within their organisations. When looking for guidance in the wider digital preservation community literature, theory and informal practices are available, but specifications on how to perform monitoring have not been identified. This work offers explanations to help your organisation undergo close monitoring and general risk assessment of your archival data collections.
As we have demonstrated with the efforts of those in ICRFF, digital preservation is not a problem that we can solve alone. We are proud to work together to advance shared standards and solutions.
