Are you an archivist looking to build your digital skills? Don’t look further: the Bits and Bots study group is here to help! Our study group started in 2024, and brings together professionals eager to learn digital skills in a collaborative and supportive environment. In 2025, we’re launching a new cohort—and you’re invited!
In this blog, you’ll find details about the study group, what we accomplished last year, and our exciting plans for 2025. Plus, if you’re interested, you can sign up for a kick-off meeting to get to know the study group, before you decide to join.
About the study group
The Bits and Bots study group was founded by Francesca Mackenzie (National Archives UK), Lotte Wijsman, and Susanne van den Eijkel (National Archives of the Netherlands). As professionals in digital preservation, we realised that even with humanities backgrounds, a basic level of technical skills can significantly enhance our work. From analysing files in a hex editor to installing tools via GitHub, digital know-how is invaluable!
We designed this study group to make learning digital skills approachable and fun. Participants can choose between two tracks:
- Python Track – Learn the fundamentals of coding in Python by building games.
- Front-End Development Track – Explore HTML, CSS, and JavaScript while developing a game project.
Each month, you’ll work through a module and apply your skills immediately. We also host monthly online meetings, which include:
- Catch-up sessions to discuss progress
- Expert-led sessions on specialised topics, such as APIs, GitHub and the command prompt in Windows.

Looking Back: Highlights from 2024
Our first cohort in 2024 was a huge success! Here’s what we accomplished:
- 45 members from 5 continents participated.
- Members built several games using Python and front-end development.
- We provided two in-depth guides on using the Command Prompt and GitHub.
- Expert sessions covered topics like 3D modeling, APIs, and UX design.
We were honoured to receive the Digital Preservation Award for Teaching and Communications!

What’s New for 2025?
This year, based on feedback of the first group, we’re introducing:
- More balanced modules to ensure steady progress
- Two recess periods to catch up if needed
- Assignments tailored to your daily work for practical application
- Returning expert favorites like Command Prompt and GitHub, plus exciting new topics
📅 Program Duration: April 1, 2025 – February 2026.
It takes time to master new digital skills. Every month a new module will be released and in the summer recess some self study assignments will be provided. It is recommended to dedicate regular time to the study group. This could be 30 minutes a day, or two to three hours a week.
