Overview

Long-term sustainability planning poses a unique challenge for many open source programs. These programs are often funded and supported in ways that do not give appropriate consideration to the long-term sustainability of the applications and their communities. It Takes a Village (ITAV) was created to give OSS communities a framework and an adaptable set of tools for practical use in planning and managing sustainability for open-source software (OSS) initiatives.

This presentation will share the ITAV framework and facets (Technology, Governance, Resources, and Community Engagement) and explain how the toolkit can be used to develop sustainability plans regardless of where a program sits within its life cycle. Community testing and iteration have been critical to the toolbox of activities. Representatives from two community supported programs, VuFind® and Samvera, will talk about their experiences piloting the ITAV Toolkit and the impact on their programs. We will highlight how programs can use the guidebook and toolkit to evaluate what is working and what is not and how to take actionable steps forward.
